The word hippocampus comes from the (ancient) Greek word for seahorse. It is also used to describe the part of the brain that retains our memories, probably because it is shaped very much like a seahorse. The discipline of studying and drawing from the dried remains of this tiny organism (less than two inches long) connected me with nature’s brilliant architecture and the fragility of our lives and memories.
